What is NPW?

Nebraska Press Women is a non-profit professional organization of women and men from all branches of communications. NPW provides professional growth opportunities and offers a forum for activities of interest to communicators.

Nebraska Press Women strives to promote the highest ideals of the communications profession and to provide for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences. NPW is designed for and governed by working women and men from all areas of communications.

The diverse interests and talents of NPW's members strengthen the organization. The organization offers opportunities for professional growth and coordinates activities of interest to all professional communicators.

Founded in 1946, Nebraska Press Women will soon be celebrating 60 years of striving for excellence.

There's plenty of room for professional and personal growth in Nebraska Press Women. From community newspapers to the state's largest dailies and from broadcasting to advertising and public relations, NPW's membership is as diverse as Nebraska itself. The rich diversity offers an unusual and inviting opportunity to exchange ideas, opinions and friendships with professionals in various segments of communications. .

National Affiliation

Nebraska Press Women, Inc., is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), a nationwide organization of professional women - and men - pursuing careers across the communications spectrum. NFPW offers professional development through an annual national convention, cost-effective libel insurance, peer competition, a grassroots First Amendment e-mail alert system, a quarterly newsletter, networking, member services, national advocacy on issues significant to members and more. Membership Eligibility
NPW welcomes all women and men working as professionals in any area of communications for at least one year immediately prior to membership. In addition to professional membership status, other membership categories are available to students and retired people.

National Federation of Press Women Code of Ethics
As a professional communicator, I recognize my responsibility to the public, which has placed its trust and confidence in my work and will endeavor to do nothing to abuse this obligation.

With truth as my ultimate goal, I will adhere to the highest standards of professional communications, never consciously misleading reader, viewer or listener; and will avoid any compromise of my objectivity and fairness.

Because I believe that professional communicators must be obligated only to the people's right to know, I affirm that freedom of the press is to be guarded as an inalienable right of the citizens of a free society.

I pledge to use this freedom wisely and to uphold the right of communicators to express unpopular opinions as well as the right to agree with the majority.

 

Our Mission
Nebraska Press Women Founded March 22, 1946, as the Nebraska Women's Press Club with the mission statement:

"To promote the highest ideals in journalism;
to provide exchange of journalistic ideas and experiences; and to coordinate editorial
opinion on matters of national interest to women."

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
